I’m not sure that the OP is trying to make relations better, or if they are, this isn’t really helpful. Men need to realize that while they mean well (and to others: they do actually mean well), it doesn’t come across that way. Men don’t have the right to tell women (or really, anyone) how to feel - and yes, happiness is a feeling. That’s the real crux of the matter. To women: ya’ll should realize that the men who do this typically don’t realize the implications of what they’re doing. They are actually trying to be positive. It has been shown that smiling more (for any particular person) even if you’re not happy can improve your mood, and so the people who do this merely want to see you happy (of course, rarely is any decision based on a singular objective, but overall the people who do this are well-meaning). While at the end of the day, it’s important to realize that the end result doesn’t match with the objective, it’s also important to realize that the intention is well-meaning. In doing so, we can sustain the positive intention while changing how that intention is carried out, thereby improving the overall situation for everyone

Listen buddy, if we start assuming good intentions behind all the shitty stuff some men do, they’ll never learn to fucking STOP IT. We are here to razz the living fuck out of people for pulling ridiculous shit like this, not stroke their hair and whisper sweetly how it’s all OK, because it ain’t.
